The Golden Age of Tom and Jerry (1940-1958)

The first Tom and Jerry cartoon, 1940's "Puss Gets the Boot," is actually a "Jasper and Jinx" toon. Jasper was the name of the cat and Jinx the name of the mouse. Hanna and Barbera just didn't think those monikers suited their creations, and seeking ideas from crew members, they went with animator John Carr's suggestion of Tom and Jerry. The short was a hit with audiences, and MGM commissioned more cartoons featuring the duo. Hanna and Barbera produced 114 Tom and Jerry shorts for MGM from 1940 to 1958. During this time, they won seven Academy Awards for Best Animated Short Film, tying for first place with Walt Disney's Silly Symphonies with the most awards in the category. Some of the most famous shorts from this era include "The Cat Concerto" (1946), "The Little Orphan" (1948), "The Two Mouseketeers" (1951), and "Johann Mouse" (1952). The shorts were driven entirely by action and visual humor; the characters almost never spoke. The animation was fluid, detailed, and expressive, and the music was composed by Scott Bradley, who matched the action with classical, jazz, and pop tunes.

The Post-Golden Age of Tom and Jerry (1958-2005)

After Hanna and Barbera left MGM in 1957 to start their own studio, MGM revived the series with Gene Deitch directing an additional 13 Tom and Jerry shorts for Rembrandt Films from 1961 to 1962. These shorts were criticized for their low-quality animation, limited sound effects, and bizarre plots. Tom and Jerry then became the highest-grossing animated short film series of that time, overtaking Looney Tunes. Chuck Jones then produced another 34 shorts with Sib Tower 12 Productions between 1963 and 1967. These shorts changed certain elements of the series, such as giving Tom a new design, adding a new character named Quacker the duckling, and softening the violence. The shorts also featured Jones' trademark style of animation, humor, and music.

The series became popular on television in the 1960s, airing on various networks such as CBS, ABC, Cartoon Network, Boomerang, and others. Hanna and Barbera's own company acquired the rights to create new Tom and Jerry episodes specifically for the small screen, producing 48 stories between 1975 and 1977. These episodes were part of The Tom and Jerry Show (1975), which also featured other characters such as Spike the dog, Tyke the puppy, Tuffy the mouseketeer, Droopy the dog, Barney Bear, etc. The show was subject to censorship due to concerns over violence in children's cartoons. The show was followed by The Tom and Jerry Comedy Show (1980-1982), which had a similar format but with more slapstick humor. In 1990, Tom & Jerry Kids debuted on Fox Kids, featuring younger versions of Tom and Jerry along with other characters such as Droopy Jr., Dripple, McWolf, etc. The show lasted for four seasons until 1993. In 2006, Warner Bros. debuted a new television series, Tom and Jerry Tales , which was closely modeled after the original theatrical shorts. The show ran for two seasons until 2008.

The Modern Age of Tom and Jerry (2006-present)

In addition to television shows, Tom and Jerry have also starred in several feature-length films, both theatrical and direct-to-video. The first feature-length film based on the series, Tom and Jerry: The Movie, was released in 1992, and featured the characters speaking for the first time. The film was a musical adventure that involved Tom and Jerry befriending a runaway girl and helping her find her father. The film received negative reviews from critics and fans, who disliked the deviation from the original premise of the series. Since then, 13 direct-to-video films have been produced since 2002, featuring Tom and Jerry in various settings and genres, such as magic, pirates, Sherlock Holmes, Willy Wonka, etc. Some of these films also featured crossover characters from other Warner Bros. properties, such as The Wizard of Oz, Scooby-Doo, Jonny Quest, etc. The most recent film, Tom and Jerry: The Fast and the Furry (2020), was a racing comedy that parodied The Fast and the Furious franchise.

In 2021, a live-action/animated hybrid film titled Tom and Jerry was released by Warner Bros. The film starred Chloë Grace Moretz, Michael Peña, Colin Jost, Rob Delaney, and Ken Jeong, along with the animated versions of Tom and Jerry. The film followed Tom and Jerry as they caused chaos in a New York hotel that was preparing for a high-profile wedding. The film was a surprise box office hit, grossing more than $100 million worldwide. The film also received mixed reviews from critics and audiences, who praised the animation and nostalgia factor, but criticized the human characters and story. A musical adaptation of the series, titled Tom and Jerry: Purr-Chance to Dream , debuted in Japan in 2019 in advance of Tom and Jerry's 80th anniversary. The musical featured original songs and dances inspired by the classic shorts.

Conclusion

Tom and Jerry is a timeless and universal cartoon that has entertained generations of fans around the world. The series has influenced many other animators and comedians, such as John Kricfalusi, Matt Groening, Jim Carrey, etc. The series has also spawned countless merchandise, such as toys, games, books, comics, clothing, etc. Tom and Jerry is a cultural phenomenon that shows no signs of slowing down. Whether you prefer the old-school shorts or the modern adaptations, there is something for everyone in Tom and Jerry.
